Observerende documentaire die inzicht geeft in de totstandkoming van het schilderij Standbeeld voor de schilder (Rembrandt).
Beeldend kunstenaar Peter Kantelberg (1947) is een getrainde schilder. We zien in de film hoe hij een nieuw werk construeert vanuit een tekening en het opbouwt uit bijna transparante en ogenschijnlijk voorbedachte lagen.
De film volgt het proces zoals dit zich voor de ogen van de filmer heeft voltrokken. De handelingen die horen bij het werken aan een doek vormen de essentie van de film. De film kent een trage compositorisch klassieke start, gaandeweg wordt de montage dynamischer en worden de opnames abrupter afgebroken. De waarheidsgetrouwe volgorde van de handelingen is aangehouden. Kantelberg komt in de film niet aan het woord. We horen het geluid van het hanteren van gereedschap en de voetstappen van de schilder, duidelijk iemand die iets aan het doen is. Er is uitsluitend gewerkt met het licht in de studio; van nature aanwezig en veranderlijk. De schilder staat soms helder voor ons in de binnendringende zon. Op andere momenten is hij als silhouet een donker figuur zonder gezicht.
De film vertelt niets feitelijks over de levenswandel van Kantelberg maar onderliggend kunnen we ons door de film een voorstelling maken van hoe hij al jarenlang op vergelijkbare wijze werkt aan zijn inmiddels omvangrijke oeuvre.
Van 17 juni t/m 12 augustus 2018 presenteren de Van GoghGalerie en het Stedelijk Museum Breda in de StadsGalerij aan de Oude Vest te Breda een overzicht van het werk van Peter Kantelberg. Deze tentoonstelling is een samenwerking tussen de twee kunstinstellingen, met als onderliggend doel aandacht te vragen voor behoud van de StadsGalerij Breda als plek voor beeldende kunst. De film zal doorlopend vertoond worden in de tentoonstelling.

Observational documentary that gives insight into the creation of the painting Statue for the Painter (Rembrandt).
Visual artist Peter Kantelberg (1947) is a trained painter. In the film we can see how he constructs the new work from a drawing and how he builds it up out of almost transparent and seemingly premeditated layers.
The film follows the process as it has taken place in front of the filmmaker’s eyes. The actions of the painter form the essence of the film. The film has a slow and compositional classic start, gradually the whole becomes more dynamic and the shots are more abruptly edited. The chronological order of the actions has been maintained. Kantelberg does not speak in the film. We hear the sound of the handling of tools and the footsteps of the painter, clearly someone who is doing something. There’s only the light in the studio; present by nature and changeable. The painter sometimes appears very clear to us in the penetrating sun. At other times he is as a silhouette, a dark figure without a face.
The film does not tell us anything about the life of Kantelberg, but underlying it all we can imagine the way in which he has been working in a similar way on his now extensive oeuvre.
From 17 June to 12 August 2018, the Van Gogh Gallery and the Stedelijk Museum Breda will present an overview of the work of Peter Kantelberg in the StadsGalerij at the Oude Vest, Breda. This exhibition is a collaboration between the two art institutions, with the underlying aim of calling attention to maintaining the StadsGalerij as a place for visual art. The film will be shown continuously in this exhibition.
